Why the Hawks can cover
The matchup between the Hawks and Thunder on Friday wasn’t a total blowout, but with the Hawks falling 135-119 at home it was close to turning into one. Despite their defeat, the Hawks saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Onyeka Okongwu, who dropped a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Trae Young, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 12 assists.

Young has been sensational for the Hawks this season, averaging 23.8 points per game. He’s also averaging 11.4 assists per game, the most in the NBA. The Hawks are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games on the road and 6-3 ATS in their past nine road games against Memphis. See which team to pick here.

Why the Grizzlies can cover
The point spread may have favored the Grizzlies on Saturday, but the final result did not. They lost 130-128 to the Spurs on a last-minute shot from De’Aaron Fox. The close contest was extra heartbreaking for Memphis, who almost overcame a 22-point deficit.

Despite the loss, the Grizzlies got a productive performance from Jaren Jackson Jr., who went 15 for 25 en route to 42 points, two steals and two blocks. Jackson Jr. is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he’s now posted two or more in the last three games he’s played. For the season, Jackson Jr. is averaging 23.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He’s also knocking down 49.7% of his field goals. See which team to pick here.

2025 NBA picks, March 3 best bets from proven model

We’ve got another exciting interconference contest on Monday’s NBA schedule as the Utah Jazz will host the Detroit Pistons. Utah is 15-45 overall and 8-23 at home, while Detroit is 34-27 overall and 17-13 on the road. The Jazz defeated the Pistons, 126-119, in Detroit on Dec. 19 in their first meeting of the season for their fourth straight head-to-head victory.

Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. ET from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Pistons are favored by 11 points in the latest Jazz vs. Pistons odds, according to the SportsLine consensus. The over/under is 231.5 points. Before entering any Pistons vs. Jazz picks, you’ll want to see the NBA predictions from the model at SportsLine.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every NBA game 10,000 times and has returned well over $10,000 in betting profit for $100 players on its top-rated NBA picks over the past six-plus seasons. Why the Pistons can cover
The Pistons are coming off a 115-94 win over the Nets on Saturday to improve to 9-1 overall over their last 10 games. Detroit is 8-2 ATS over that span and has the sixth-best ATS record (34-25-2, 57.6%) in the NBA this season. Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is 12th in the league in scoring (25.2 points per game) and third in assists (9.4 per game) and he’s hasn’t needed to be a one-man show lately. Malik Beasley has led the Pistons in scoring in two of the last three games and Jalen Duren led Detroit with 18 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday.

The Pistons are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference after going through one of the poorest stretches in NBA history over recent seasons. Detroit has a top-15 scoring offense (114.4 ppg, 12th in the league) and scoring defense (113.0 ppg, 15th in the league) to aid its turnaround along with the No. 2 scoring fastbreak offense (19.1 ppg). Meanwhile, the Jazz are allowing the second-most fast break points (17.3 ppg) and are battling multiple injuries such as Jordan Clarkson (foot, out), Lauri Markkanen (back, out) and Collin Sexton (ankle, questionable). See which team to pick here.

Why the Jazz can cover
It’s been a trying season for Utah, especially given its recent rash of injuries to nearly the entire starting lineup, but it has allowed young players the chance to flourish. Keyonte George, the No. 16 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, had 28 points in 31 minutes in a 128-121 loss to the Pelicans on Sunday and he’s averaging 16.8 points and 6.0 assists per game this season. He’s scored at least 20 points in four of six games since the All-Star Break and the Jazz are 4-2 ATS over that span.

The Jazz are 13-4 ATS against the Eastern Conference and 17-13 ATS as the home underdog this season. The Jazz’s struggles and injuries are factored into the point spread and Utah has often outperformed the oddsmakers’ expectations, and that can continue on Monday. See which team to pick here.

How to make Pistons vs. Jazz picks
The model has simulated Jazz vs. Pistons 10,000 times and the results are in. The model is leaning Over, projecting 233 combined points, and it also says one side of the spread is the better value. You can only see the pick at SportsLine.

Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander bolsters MVP case with fourth 50-point game of season in win over Rockets

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the current betting favorite for MVP, but the award isn’t locked up with Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets having his own historic season right behind him. In fact, who knows if Jokić even is behind Gilgeous-Alexander in voters’ minds. In truth, the only thing betting odds tell you is how wagered money is coming in from the public.

Either way, this is a tight race and everything that both Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokić, and by extension their teams, do over the final five weeks of the season — good or bad — will have an impact on the final tally.

I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m going to guess that Gilgeous-Alexander putting up 51 points in Oklahoma City’s win over the Rockets on Monday qualifies as a good thing on his side of the ledger.

This was the fourth time that Gilgeous-Alexander has scored at least 50 points this season, which leads the league. And all four of those 50-point outings have come in his last 19 games. Gilgeous-Alexander also leads the league in 40-point games (9), 30-point games (37) and 20-point games (59). SGA has only scored fewer than 20 points one time this season, and even then he scored 18 in the fourth game of the season.

Add that up, and that’s 56 straight games with at least 20 points for the league’s scoring leader at 32.6 points per game. The next closest player is Jalen Brunson, who has scored 20 in seven consecutive games. Seven. Think about that.

The icing on the cake was that SGA’s performance Monday came in the Thunder’s 50th win of the season, and they needed every bit of their top dog’s scoring. Houston put up 128 points despite being without four starters in Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet.

Jalen Williams scored 24 for Oklahoma City but no other starter had more than 11. Gilgeous-Alexander made 18 of his 30 shots including 5 of 9 from 3, and he was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line. He added seven assists, five rebounds plus a steal and a block in the 137-128 victory.

Nuggets could land Pelicans’ $158 million All-Star in ‘monster’ trade, per report

The Denver Nuggets are currently engulfed in plenty of trade speculation, as their 14-10 record and No. 5 seed placement in the Western Conference is a cause for concern during what may be Nikola Jokić’s fourth MVP season.

Jokić’s unbelievable averages of 30.9 points, 13.3 rebounds and 9.9 assists on a wonderful 64.4% true shooting percentage have kept Denver above water despite their lack of contributions from his most relied-upon co-stars.

While the 26-year-old Michael Porter Jr. is putting together one of his best seasons, the usual No. 2 option behind Jokić, Jamal Murray, has contributed just 18.4 points on a 49.0% effective field goal percentage.

Murray’s down season has caused Denver’s general manager Calvin Booth to scour the trade market to find another offensively talented star to pair with Jokić to keep their championship window open.

After sifting through suitable options, the Nuggets’ best trade target could be the New Orleans Pelicans star Brandon Ingram.

Ingram is currently averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists while knocking down the three-pointer at a 37.4% clip on 6.4 attempts for the lowly 5-22 Pelicans.

The 2020 Most Improved Player award winner and former All-Star has proven his worth as one of the most consistent scoring options in the entire NBA, leading to many franchises inquiring about his availability as the Feb. 6 trade deadline approaches.

Recent reports indicate that the Nuggets have been named as a team currently exploring a move for the versatile 6-foot-8 forward.

“The Athletic report on the Nuggets’ search for a scorer, I’ve heard Brandon Ingram is another player among the group on their radar,” SNY’s Ian Begley reported via Twitter/X Tuesday night.

“FWIW: the clearest pathway for Denver to make a trade for a big scorer with a significant salary would be to include Michael Porter Jr. in a deal.”

In reference to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and his reporting on Denver’s chase for a shot creator to play alongside Jokić, the news of Porter Jr. needing to be shipped out in a potential deal was expected, as his salary would be best for matching a contract like Ingram’s.

In light of these developments, plenty of NBA sources are inferring that this acquisition by Denver would drastically improve the team due to Ingram’s incredible shot-creation skills.

“Aside from superstar center Nikola Jokic and his longtime running mate Jamal Murray, the Nuggets severely lack players who could call their own number offensively,” wrote FanSided’s Lior Lampert on Wednesday.

“Porter and the rest of the group primarily operate off-ball, though Denver ostensibly needs/wants another person who can handle the rock à la Ingram.”

Trade rumors point to Warriors and Nuggets swapping champions to bolster title hopes

As the Denver Nuggets try to capitalize on the prime of Nikola Jokić’s career and the Golden State Warriors try to win one more title with Stephen Curry, it’s clear that neither team has a working formula.

The Nuggets started slow and finally found their footing, whereas the Warriors emerged red-hot and have since fallen back to Earth. If the NBA playoffs were to start today, neither team would get a home-court advantage.

The Warriors, all season, have been linked to some premier trade candidates. In recent weeks, rumors have pointed to the Nuggets making a deal of their own. Both teams have been loosely linked to Brandon Ingram and Zach LaVine, but with delicate salaries to balance, it makes the most sense if the two teams just make a deal with one another.

According to recent reports, the Nuggets should have plenty of interest in Andrew Wiggins, who is one of the Warriors’ key starters.

“If the Nuggets are dead-set on completely shaking up their core, they shouldn’t hesitate to look in the direction of the Golden State Warriors for help,” FanSided’s Michael Saenz wrote Wednesday. “Even though the Warriors may not be sold on the idea of trading Andrew Wiggins, the least the Nuggets could do is ask. At least in my opinion, Wiggins’ ceiling in a fresh start could be higher than Michael Porter Jr.’s this season.

“Would the Warriors be interested in such a swap? It’s hard to say but they could be considering MPJ is younger and is historically a better shooter. It’s an interesting swap that could make sense for both sides if they’re still looking to shake up their rosters ahead of the trade deadline.”

The Warriors have the sixth-best defensive rating and 14th-best offense. The Nuggets are in an entirely different boat, with the seventh-ranked offense and 16th-ranked defense.

If the Nuggets offer Porter Jr. and a future pick swap for the defensively-talented Wiggins and Gary Payton II, the Dubs could be able to bolster their offense and add a deadly off-ball scorer to complement Curry and recent addition Dennis Schröder, who work best with the ball in their hands, as does Wiggins.

Warriors frontcourt being ‘evaluated’ per NBA insider, crucial trade may materialize

The Golden State Warriors currently hold a 14-11 record and are positioned as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference through 25 contests.

The Warriors’ recent trade to acquire surging point guard Dennis Schröder from the Brooklyn Nets was finalized Sunday morning, but it seems that their general manager Mike Dunleavy may not be finished making moves as the Feb. 6 trade deadline approaches.

Highlights: Jerzy Robinson leads Sierra Canyon over Vanden in high school girls basketball

After landing Schröder to bolster his backcourt following the season-ending ACL injury to guard De’Anthony Melton and the recent offensive regression of Brandin Podziemski, Dunleavy is now eyeing a move to improve the frontcourt, per recent reports.

“NBA Insider Jake Fischer reported Thursday that ‘Golden State is still evaluating its own center rotation’ with Kevon Looney drawing interest from around the league,” shared Bleacher Report’s Scott Polacek Thursday afternoon.

“There is still a win-now window that is open with the 36-year-old Curry leading the way, and the best way to maximize that window may be by adding frontcourt players ahead of the February trade deadline.”

It would make sense that the team could offer up a serviceable center like Looney while targeting several center upgrades that have been heavily mentioned in the trade market like the Washington Wizards’ Jonas Valančiūnas, the Atlanta Hawks’ Clint Capela and the Charlotte Hornets’ Nick Richards.

A consistent veteran and three-time NBA champion, Looney has surprisingly become one of the more important pieces to the Warriors’ dynastic run, and especially during their most recent journey to the 2022 NBA title.

Although Looney has become a reliable frontcourt option for the Warriors since he was drafted with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the franchise could look to move in a different direction by shipping the 28-year-old out for an improved center addition in return.

Looney is currently contributing 5.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in just 16.6 minutes of action for Golden State this season, making him an interesting trade target.

Along with Looney, the Warriors’ recent No. 57 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft Trayce Jackson-Davis has been monitored as a potential trade chip that could be dealt. Jackson-Davis is also performing well in limited minutes, averaging 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in 16.8 minutes.

Using both center options as bait to lure in a fantastic upgrade at the position could be a great idea for Golden State, as they could find more offensively skilled players to fit their needs as an organization.

Hawks to rival Raptors, Wizards as major player on trade market by dealing key piece

As the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline draws near, plenty of teams are expected to make a splash. With Brandon Ingram, Jimmy Butler, Cameron Johnson, Zion Williamson and even LeBron James included in rumors and mock trades, it’s hard to imagine a move that would be shocking.

For much of the season, centers have dominated the news cycles. Brook Lopez, Walker Kessler, Jonas Valančiūnas and Myles Turner are all seen as premier trade targets, and with the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and others all showing some degree of interest in fortifying their frontcourt, it’s only a matter of time before another domino falls.

Highlights: Jerzy Robinson leads Sierra Canyon over Vanden in high school girls basketball

The Indiana Pacers got trade season kicked off, making a move to add Thomas Bryant from the Miami Heat, but that trade will quickly be overshadowed. Kelly Olynyk, Nic Claxton and Valančiūnas are all expected to be on new teams, although the Atlanta Hawks might get their hands dirty.

“There’s a rather robust trade market coalescing for centers this winter. With many names and situations to monitor,”NBA insider Jake Fischer wrote on “The Stein Line” on Thursday.

In the same report, Fischer said that the Hawks have the utmost faith in 24-year-old Onyeka Okongwu and are eager to deal away the last year of Clint Capela’s contract.

Capela is averaging 10 points, 9.4 rebounds and a block this season and would be an excellent backup center for a contender like the Lakers. For about a month, Valančiūnas and Olynyk were seen as the only affordable, quality options for the Lakers, although if Capela is indeed on the market, expect contenders to be ready to make a move before the limited options get snapped up.

76ers may help Heat solve Jimmy Butler drama by assisting in blockbuster trade

Charania has added that the Phoenix Suns are one of the teams on Butler’s ideal landing spots list. Making a trade for Butler would be even trickier for the Suns because it would require one of their expensive contracts, like Bradley Beal’s.

The Heat likely don’t want Beal’s salary on their books, so that’s where the Sixers could potentially come in. The following trade between the Heat, Sixers, and Suns could solve the Butler situation.

Heat get: Paul George

Suns get: Jimmy Butler

Sixers get: Bradley Beal

The Heat and Sixers would also have to send some contracts elsewhere, but that wouldn’t be too difficult because the teams would only have to reduce their payroll by a couple hundred thousand dollars to execute the trade.

Beal would give the Sixers more ball-handling and floor-spacing to a team that definitely needs just that. It’d be hard to see the Sixers go after him unless they are desperate to improve and believe George isn’t helping. There’s another factor here.

Bradley Beal would also have to agree to a trade
As part of his contract, Beal has a no-trade clause, meaning he has to sign off on where he goes before a trade could happen. That could be a problem, but he might find some appeal in joining the Sixers, a playoff contender trying to make the NBA Finals for the first time since 2001.

Beal’s expensive contract would definitely repel anyone in trade discussions, but there’s an argument to be made that he would fit the Sixers like a glove.

CJ McCollum’s brother responds to recent rumors surrounding trade to Bucks

That’s not close to what Middleton could produce when he’s 100%. Given his age and injury history, there’s a chance that he may never get back to that level. That means a trade could happen. If they do, one player they could go after is New Orleans Pelicans scorer CJ McCollum.

Recently, it has been suggested that the Bucks have the highest odds of acquiring McCollum if the Pelicans decide to trade him. Such a trade would reunite him with Damian Lillard.

McCollum’s brother Errick responded to this. While he did not confirm whether a trade would happen, he would be all for it if it went down.

“(I don’t know) if this true or not but everything is unpredictable in the league. My brother is happy in New Orleans and has become a staple in the community…. BUT if this did happen, this right here would be something special to watch (eyes emoji) they chemistry,” McCollum wrote.

Lillard and McCollum have had (limited) success together
Lillard and McCollum made the Portland Trail Blazers a perennial playoff contender from 2015 to 2021. They won multiple playoff series together and even reached the Western Conference Finals in 2019.

However, that’s as far as they went. That team lacked more star power, which the Bucks would provide with Giannis Antetokounmpo.

If this reunion were to happen, the Bucks would gain a solid offensive infusion from someone familiar with Lillard’s game. The Bucks have a window on their hands, so if Middleton doesn’t improve, McCollum would be a solid trade return for him.
